Sex Happens

World AIDS Day was December 1st and I missed it. But AIDS is not the kind of thing that should be swept under the rug just because it's not December 1st anymore, so I figured I would post something, even if a few days late.

The official theme of World AIDS Day 2006 was accountability, the idea that we should hold our public officials accountable for promises previously made to stop the spread of AIDS. If you’re interested, you can read all about it here. The theme of this post will be simpler.

Sex Happens. Protect Yourself.

Let’s be realistic; abstinence education only goes so far. People are going to have sex. It may be straight or gay, with one partner or various, but people are going to have sex. Probably lots and lots of sex.

So figure out what you need to do to make sure the sex you have is as safe as possible. (Hint: This will probably involve the use of condoms – every time! – unless you are in a long-term monogamous relationship and both you and your partner know – not just think – that you have no sexually-transmittable diseases.) Because as enjoyable as a good romp between the sheets is, it is definitely not worth dying over.

Oh, and one more thing…tell a friend. Or two. The more people who protect themselves, the faster the spread of AIDS will be stopped.
