Does This Offend You? (#11)

A Little Too Late, by Toby Keith

Because it offended plenty of folks in the blogsphere. (See
here, here, here and here, for example.)

And with good reason! Listening to five minutes of Toby Keith's singing is enough to offend just about anyone.

As for the video, though, I couldn't get all up in arms about it. Sure, I was uncomfortable with the way the story line was unfolding - In fact, as I watched it I was thinking WTF?! - but that's why this video speaks to the issue of domestic violence, whether Toby intended it or not. You see, if you're uncomfortable (or, if you insist...offended) by the thought of what the guy has in mind, that's good because the reality is that when abusers 'snap' it ain't pretty. On the other hand, if you're not even a tad bit concerned that the hot chick is seemingly about to get snuffed, then you're probably just like the dumb fuck who bricks himself in his basement.

Either way, the video makes you think about domestic violence on some level. And that's something we don't do nearly enough, considering the number of people affected. Even though almost everyone knows someone who has been touched by domestic violence, the issue is usually kept hush-hush, a private matter, blah, blah, blah. That solves nothing. How can we do anything about domestic violence if we shy away from it? Before action must come thought. Maybe if domestic violence was thrust in our face more often, people would get to thinking. If the medium ends up being a country music video, then so be it. After all, the best art is the kind that not only entertains, but makes you think as well.

Did I just use the words 'best' and 'art' when talking about a country music video? Yikes! That's offensive.

It didn't offend me. Mostly cause I felt like it was calculated *to* offend me, and I am not a joiner :P
