Prohibition in the Arctic Circle

The government of Greenland recently outlawed the sale of alcohol in the remote village of Qaanaaq after a report "uncovered drastic alcohol-related child neglect problems" there.

The ban was enacted against the recommendations of the report's author who feared that "cutting off sales [of alcohol] to an entire community of substance abusers would result in mass depression and hysteria."

OK, so maybe the story and the pictures don't exactly go together, but they are all from Greenland so close enough. These pictures really are from Qaanaaq, if you're interested.

Qaanaaq... odd name. That first picture is even more odd.

This ban was 'allegedly' instigated by a temporary drama teacher from Denmark, visiting Qaanaaq for the first time. It isn't an accurate reflection of what is really happening there and the ban is expected to be lifted soon. I would be very surprised if the boy in the fancy dress is actually from Qaanaaq, the kamik on his head and feet are from Southern Greenland. The story was sensationalised by the press, never ones to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

That's kind of funny.

But I've always wanted to wear a pink bra over a mutilated anorak with go-go boots..

Thinker: Yes, and Qaanaaq is a palindrome. That's bound to end up as a Jeopardy clue someday, so file it away under seemingly useless factoids that you may have use for someday.

Cherry: Seems like you are in the know about Greenland. You are right that the top picture in not from Qaanaaq. As mentioned at the end of the post, the pics and the story do not go together. The top picture is from Narsaq.

Travis: Yes, I'm surprised the story hasn't been picked up by the wires and featured under 'odd news.'

Hearts in SF: What's stopping you? Go for it. You might start a new fashion trend. ;)
