Does This Offend You? (#12)

From Kathy Griffin's acceptance speech for best reality show at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, taped September 8th:

''A lot of people come up here and they thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. He didn't help me a bit. If it were up to him, Caesar Milan would be up here with that damn dog. So all I can say is, 'Suck it, Jesus! This award is my god now!''' **

Because it offended some of Jesus's followers:

  • On a Showbiz Tonight segment, Catholic League president, Bill Donahue, called Griffin's comments "worse than racism because now you are offending 85% of the population who are believers."

  • FOX News Channel religion correspondent, Laureen Green, wrote on a FOX News blog that Griffin "offended me and millions of other Christians," adding that "Jesus had everything to do with her winning that award" because "Ninety-four percent of America's founding era documents mention the Bible" which means "The freedoms we enjoy in this country to speak freely and to live freely are directly related to [Jesus]."

Reportedly because of prodding by the Catholic League, some or all of Griffin's comments will be edited out of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards telecast, scheduled for September 15th on E!. Nothing like caving to the pressure of the religious right, freedom of speech and religion (which Jesus died on the cross for us to have!) be damned.

The ironic thing is that, if it weren't for the big hoopla over Griffin's remarks, probably only like 0.0001% of the American television viewing audience would know about the Creative Arts Emmy Awards show. It's not the 'real' (Primetime) Emmys, after all, but rather the show that honors mostly behind-the-scenes people like costume designers and casting directors. Boring! If anyone even bothers to tune in to watch the show this Saturday,
the show's producers owe it to Kathy Griffin. Perhaps they should show their appreciation by not editing out her 'Suck it Jesus' comment. All in agreement, click here.

**Abstracted from this video. Griffin reportedly also said, "Can you believe this shit? Hell has frozen over." Most reports do not, however, include this text so it would seem those who deem Griffin's speech offensive take exception with her saying, "Suck it, Jesus! This award is my god now!"

I think her speech sounded awesome and hilarious. People need to get themselves a sense of humour! Obviously these people never watch Family Guy or South Park - they do stuff like that ALL the time. Jeesh.
