Wire Hanger Sales Increase

Conservative lawmakers in Missouri appear to care deeply about the pro-life agenda women's health issues. Case in point: They passed a law mandating that all clinics or doctors' offices in the state that perform 5+ abortive procedures per month - including those that only dispense the RU486 pill - have (among other things) fully-equipped surgical suites with doors at least 44 inches wide. Those who supported the legislation say the law is intended to make abortion clinics go out of business safer for women.

"How is expanding the doorway size going to improve women's health?" asked Michelle Trupiano, a statewide lobbyist for Planned Parenthood. [LA Times, 9/10/07]
Missouri abortion providers estimate retrofitting their facilities to meet the new requirements might run in the $500,000 - $1,000,000+ range. Two of the state's main abortion clinics and one private provider indicated the high cost might force them to close. The real issue, however, is not the cost per se, but rather that there is no evidence of any cost-benefit - in terms of improved safety at abortion clinics - with the changes mandated by the regulations. The law is nothing more than a thinly-veiled attempt by pro-lifers to tromp on Roe v. Wade.

[Planned Parenthood] ... filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the new regulations are unnecessary and are not meant to improve safety, but rather to interfere with a woman's constitutional right to abortion. [Kaiser Daily Rpt, 9/12/2007]
Implementation of the Missouri regulations are on hold until later this month so a judge can review the case.

In an unrelated story, retailers report sales of wire hangers are up throughout the state.
