Survival of the Fittest

Rooftop sunbathers and loiterers in Boston could face fines of up to $500 for hanging out on a roof under a ... proposed ordinance ... brought before the [Boston] City Council today by Councilor Mike Ross ... There are currently no restrictions on roof access in Boston, Ross said ... Ross said he also has received complaints about students playing full-scale soccer games on rooftops ... “It’s to prevent people from hurting themselves and dying,” he said. [Boston Herald, 11/28/07]
Um, do we really need a law for this? I mean, if people are stupid enough to play soccer on a roof that is not equipped for such activities, maybe they deserve to fall off and die. Survival of the fittest and all.

Note to Bostonites: Ross has to iron out the ordinance language before it can sail through the Council, so rooftop soccer matches are still legal at the moment. Wicked stupid, but legal. (Titillating 90-minute video of the relevant Council meeting here, if you care.)
